This week of celebrations on September 18 coincides with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, a holiday that represents the beginning of a new cycle and a new opportunity to reflect on how we are leading our lives. We are facing days of introspection that allow us to dimension what is our responsibility and our role, both from an individual and collective perspective.
Thus, in order to successfully face a new year, project or life itself, we must make amends for our mistakes, strengthen our virtues, remain alert and always remember and honor our history, which is what has brought us to this place. Therefore, each one of us represents a small part of our country’s potential, at a time when it is still immersed in a complex period of deterioration and decadence.
The last few years have been especially hard and the horizon often seems elusive or full of uncertainty. The political immobility, the lack of governance, the deterioration of the national economy, the increase in crime, in numbers and levels of violence, give us no respite and, as is natural, hope is often lost. We have witnessed the institutional fragility of Chile and how our democracy was close to plunging into a totalitarian abyss. Perhaps we still do not measure the extent to which our freedom was in danger. For the same reason, the call on these dates is not to forget what we have lived through for so many generations. We must remember the efforts of those who came before us, and contribute with ours to make Chile a better country. Chile is history, but it is also present.
The Israeli writer Amos Oz, in his book “The same sea” states that everyone carries within him his parents and his parents’ parents like “a Russian doll pregnant until the last generation”. Therefore, each new generation is the result of those that preceded it and must also assume its responsibilities for the future. The seeds that are sown today will bear fruit tomorrow. Only with this vision can we think of Chile with a sense of transcendence.
