We invite you to read the letter to the editor from our Tax Group Director, Andrea Bobadilla, who addressed the importance of tax filing season for businesses.
Dear Editor:
Just like the seasons of the year, tax filing season returns as a cyclical process that many still view solely as an administrative obligation. However, it is worth considering it from a broader perspective.
In fact, the annual tax return serves as a true economic snapshot of a business. It reflects the business’s economic reality, consistent with its contractual records, accounting records, and tax documents—all of which are captured in monthly forms, tax returns, and information reported by withholding agents.
Taken together, this information allows the Internal Revenue Service (SII) to build an increasingly accurate and realistic picture of each taxpayer’s activities.
We have moved from paper returns to automated filing proposals, thanks to the growing flow and cross-referencing of information between public and private systems, enabling the SII to more easily detect errors, inconsistencies, or even fraudulent conduct.
All in all, maintaining good tax compliance is no longer a voluntary choice; it is a necessity.
Viewed in this light, Operation Renta ceases to be merely a compliance exercise and becomes a useful opportunity to organize accounting, tax, and business information; and a chance for companies themselves to honestly review their tax situation. Because today, more than ever, both the taxpayer filing the return and the tax authority receiving it know much more about each other.
