Dear Editor-in-Chief:

This year we will have elections, but we still do not have a regulatory framework regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and the Personal Data Law Project is still being processed. Although the National AI Policy was an advance in the matter, we cannot forget how the use of certain tools in AI systems can produce negative impacts in the deepest spheres of our society.

Unfortunately, deceptive microtargeting and the dissemination of disinformation have become recurrent positions in electoral campaigns, which reveals the lack of ethical regulation in the operation of AI systems with a view to safeguarding the fundamental rights of people and information asymmetry. There are compelling reasons for the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Regulation to classify as ‘high risk’ those AI systems intended to influence electoral behavior. Do not forget the case of Cambridge Analytica or the presidential elections in Brazil in 2018. Thus, the need to inform yourself responsibly is imperative, that is, it is urgent.
